2018 Results Statement from Pricipal Stella Flannery
SFX College are delighted to report that, contrary to national trends, A level pass rates have risen this year with 22 of 27 A level courses achieving 100% pass rate. Overall, the College pass rate is almost 98%, with one in three passes achieving the optimum award of A*-B. This is a huge credit to students and staff alike. This year’s cohort will have been used to tackling a considerable amount of coursework when they tackled their GCSEs two years ago. With the new specifications they have faced with agility and success the replacement of coursework by additional exams and the challenge of tackling all external assessment at the end of two years. For the younger generation of teachers at SFX this is their first experience of teaching “linear” courses with examination weighted at the end of the course and they have risen to that challenge with distinction.
General Applied courses at SFX are also reporting a record high outcome with more distinction awards than ever before. Almost two thirds of entries have achieved the highest award and this will put those students in an advantageous position to secure some great HE or degree-level training opportunities. One in four 16-18 year olds in the UK now progress to university through the General Applied route and there are fantastic routes emerging up in the fields of science, technology and engineering and other national shortage areas to which SFX students are making a significant contribution.
We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements this year. Despite a tougher challenge, teachers and students have worked smartly and assiduously to achieve these sterling outcomes. Advanced qualifications now require a great deal of self-directed study and enquiry and this can only be successfully developed by thorough training and preparation of students by teachers and by students adopting the right attitude to learning. At SFX we have worked on a set of values that underpin our whole College approach to the acquisition and application of knowledge and practice. It entails addressing vision, practice and effort and adopting a prepared mind-set: this has paid dividends.
I would also like to commend the parents and guardians of our students who have supported them unwaveringly. At SFX our commitment is to prepare ethical leaders of the future and the “Class of 2018” are in pole position to achieve that goal.
